A day in my shoes

Here's a mini diary post of a day in my life as a florist...

As most of you may know these days finding a job is pretty rare...so if you do come across one then luck is on your side but if you're as lucky as I've been these couple of days then you've probably experienced a miracle...because I sure have. I am not talking about a hair raising miracle like that of witnessing an old lady picking up a car to save a baby, more like an ordinary miracle that happens in the most random of ways...

So here is how I experienced my own little miracle... At my very first flower shop interview, I talked to the owners for about 1 minute to for my surprise get hired on the spot...Most people who get hired on the spot get hired after they are interviewed but not me...I got hired just after our introduction and put to work on a huge corporation event with about 30-50 flower arrangements. I think that at the point where they asked me to start working after only a few minutes of being there I should of freaked out just a bit, it's only normal too I hadn't done an event yet and least of all in such little time. What if they didn't even like my work?  but I didn't even get the chance to think about it or worry. It was more like... wow I just got hired! Omg I'm working right now! Thats amazing! I'm gonna show them that it was a great decision to have hired me.
I ended up making a bunch of adorable arrangements that day for the event and I even helped close the shop..a full on work day on an interview day... It felt like out of a movie.
The first day ever at a florist position in a shop and I'm already working on an event. I doubt that happens to every florist.....so that's my little miracle. a 1 minute interview and I've got my very first true floral designer position. :)

And as far as flower shops go this is about the loveliest of all. It's called Bridget's Blooms in La Jolla and it's owned by a super nice married couple, Bridget and Micheal Oleata. The shop has been open for about 3 weeks now and been completely renovated...It's a true gem and well worth checking out. Come visit me and I'll make you something pretty.

Here's a demonstration of my very first day creations....Presenting the Event's arrangements:

These are the large table arrangements

                                      And our smaller sized arrangements

I sure do love my job :)

A Colorful Easter Party

Easter Sundays for the Scherer family don't get too crazy but this year my sister and I decided we'd set up a cute little dinner party for the fam. Nothing too fancy but something full of color ...arrangements done by me of course. :)

We fell inlove with the striped egg shaped plates...Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!

Disney Fairytale Weddings...dreams do come true

What girl hasn't dreamed about being a disney princess? All I can remember ever wanting when I was little was to be just like them. Sleeping Beauty and Belle were my all time favorite and the others weren't far behind. I grew up watching these movies year after year dreaming for a life just like theirs. A prince, a castle, the whole shabang....I wanted it all. I'm sure many girls did too but we all know that's nearly impossible until now it seems.
Disney has made it's way into the wedding industry and is making many grown up girls truly happy by giving them their dream come true weddings. When I say dream come true weddings what I mean is they are truly making all those disney princess fantasies come to life. Not only do they have their own wedding planning company called "Disney Fairytale Weddings" but they even have a bridal gown line. I was amazed and basically in somewhat of a shock when I first found out about this new disney branching out. It's crazy but yet wonderfully genius! Why did they not think about this earlier??...I mean I should have thought about this  myself haha. But thank goodness for Disney and their creativity. Their wedding company has incredible venues from island style weddings to actual disney theme park weddings. You basically get to create your perfect disney princess fairytale night and actually live it with your happily ever after and all. So all you little girls out there who are now starting to dream of your disney fairytale let me tell you theres a chance that might be possible for you, at least for your big day. Check out these creations from the Disney Fairytale Weddings...

pretty in pink bouquet

I once ran across this quote that stuck to me..."Life is the flower for which love is the honey."
I believe the quote is from a French writer not to sure of the name but wow is that romantic. Reason number 1001 why I love flowers dearly...not only are they beautiful but they inspire love in people. Every famous poet I've ever heard of has a quote in which they compare a flower with love. No wonder why weddings are full of flowers...Just the look of them make people think of love. Its just the perfect atmosphere for love...really can anything else ever replace that?..i truly doubt it. This is why I love weddings soo much and no matter where I take this floral career of mine I know I'll always be involved in weddings. If I'm not planning the wedding or being the one getting married I'll sure be the one making the bouquets and flower fantasies come to life. So heres my first attempt at it...For all you pink loving brides to be this is one bouquet that definetely screams PINK!

japanese or abstract?...i say both!

I have a sort of dilema...what is considered a japanese or asian style arrangement and what's an abstract?
Could they be the same thing? I've been going around some flower shops looking for potential job opportunities and every time I show someone my demonstration of an abstract design I get a different name for it. Some people correct me and say it's a japanese arrangement and others abstract. I say screw it..it's both!
Though I have heard most japanese florists only do arrangements that look abstract to others. The real name they use for this practice of floral design is Ikebana. These arrangements consist of only 3 flowers, which represent heaven, man, and earth. Who would of thought flower arranging could be so spiritual? But to Ikebana lovers it sure is...they take these rules super seriously and it's quiet meaningful. So to truly appreciate this new spiritual way of reaching out through flowers I've decided to take a class of Ikebana and see if I too become inspired...wish me luck!

p.s. heres my attempt of an ikebana design ...

Aloha!

For the past years I've been wanting to go to Hawaii more than anywhere else. I'm so drawn to the nature part of it. Their flowers are spectacular, better than anywhere else. Tropical flowers just have so much character. They're vibrant and all are very unique. I recently learned that Hawaii does amazing in the floral industry they sell an absurd amount of their tropical flowers around the U.S. and they are our main tropical flower suppliers. So when you do buy tropical flowers you might appreciate them a bit more knowing they've traveled a long way to California. With that said I've been working with some myself recently and I completely love the results.

I actually made an arrangement for ONO'S Cafe Island Style Bistro in Bonita California. If you've never had a bite to eat there I truly recommend you do. It's a true gem of a restaurant.  So the owner Edward Rodriguez asked me to make him a tropical tall arrangement for a table display and this is what I created for him...

The arrangement ended up being as tall as me... thoughts??

As I was searching through my pictures I got inspired and created another tropical arrangement. This one is in a smaller scale and would go great for well any occasion.
